Singer and actor Diomedes Maturan passed away at the Manila Doctors Hospital on Monday morning due to a heart attack. He was 61. His big break came in 1958 when he was a pre-dentistry student at the University of the East when he became the national champion of the Tawag ng Tanghalan amateur singing contest. That same year he was cast in the film Rose Tattoo ng Buhay Ko with Charito Solis, capitalizing on his contest-winning song, "Rose Tattoo." He made 25 movies between 1958 and 1965.
