Turnaround awards honor Berkeley youths

The Berkeley County School District honored students who have made significant changes in their lives during the annual Turnaround Achievement Award ceremony May 17.

The stories differed, but they all shared a similar theme. They were students who had been troublemakers, the ones teachers and administrators said they cringed to see coming.

For some of these turnaround students, the change in their lives took a few months. For others, the changes were several years in the making.

One student, Macedonia Middle School eighth-grader Tosha Gaskins, changed enough to coordinate a student talent show that raised $400 for the school Relay for Life team.
