Byline: TONY BARTELME
Two dozen or so Islamic extremists might have entered the country through Savannah and other U.S. ports recently by hiding in cargo containers and walking off ships dressed as stevedores.
Or, maybe they didn't.
The Coast Guard issued a secret intelligence alert this month about the possible stowaways, but law enforcement sources have said the information's reliability is questionable.
Staffers with U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings have been briefed on the stowaway report.
"The initial indication was that it came from credible sources," said Joe Davis, Hollings' spokesman, adding that security agencies are still investigating the information's reliability.
Hollings has co-sponsored new legislation to beef up security efforts by the Coast Guard, Customs and the ports themselves.
