2002 JUN 6 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Antex Biologics, Inc., (ANX) announced that it has been issued three new patents, increasing the company's total intellectual property portfolio to 101 issued patents. The company also has 339 pending patent applications around the world.
The first patent received is from South Africa, and is for a protein from the Neisseria family of bacteria. This patent claims composition, characteristics, and methods of using the protein and nucleic acids encoding the protein. This key protein has diagnostic, prophylactic, and therapeutic applications for Neisseria infections. Antex is currently performing preclinical work on the protein, and has plans to develop a vaccine against Neisseria gonorrhea, the second most common sexually transmitted disease worldwide.
The second patent received is from Singapore, and is for a protein from the Moraxella catarrhalis bacteria. The patent claims an outer member protein of Moraxella catarrhalis, antibodies to the outer membrane protein, nucleic acids encoding it, and methods of using the protein to treat or prevent diseases associated with this bacteria. Moraxella catarrhalis is an important bacterial pathogen of respiratory tract diseases, particularly otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, and pneumonia. This organism is responsible for bacterial middle ear infections in infants and young children and lower respiratory infections in the elderly.
