I fired up the XM receiver for the first time in the parking lot of the stereo shop. It had just been installed in the car, and I had 2500 miles of road trip in front of me to try it out, but I couldn't wait.

One hundred channels of satellite radio held promise of music-geek euphoria akin to picking through the used bin in a newly discovered record shop. I selected channel 70, Real Jazz, and immediately heard Monk playing Straight, No Chaser. It wasn't really warm enough, but the song inspired me to put the top down anyway. I cranked the volume and sped off across town in the Thunderbird.
