Perhaps Mr. Lightfoot put it best: ``Carefree highway, let me slip away on you.'' If only it were that simple.

* Mazda PROTEGE5

Price: $18,485

Engine: 2.0-liter I4, 130 hp, 135 lb-ft

Curb weight: 2716 lbs

Drivetrain: fwd, five-speed manual

Today carefree means having a cell phone that'll hold a charge for three days, or holding an entire life's schedule (stylus accessible, of course) in a shirt pocket. It's no surprise, then, that for many of you hitting the open road requires a little more than packing a bedroll and toothbrush. With 19.8 cubic feet of carefree cargo room (24.4 with rear seats folded), Mazda's Protege5 makes hauling all of life's little necessities easy. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the Protege5 is also one fun little car in which to eat up the miles. Its peppy little 2.0-liter four feels more powerful than the 130 horsepower Mazda says it puts out, especially given that the Protege5 is no lightweight at more than 2700 pounds.
