There's another new audio technology that's just as suited for road-tripping as satellite radio: the mp3 player.

The mp3 audio compression format is the standard for computer music files. Recently available on the market is a range of consumer devices that can read and play these files. The Alpine head unit we installed in the Thunderbird has a CD/mp3 player in it in addition to the satellite radio. It functions as a CD player for regular audio discs, but can also decode mp3 music files stored on CD-R/RW discs.

The advantage offered by a unit like this one is that you can fit literally hundreds of songs in mp3 format on a single compact disc. This makes it possible to take a far bigger collection of music along on a road trip. I ``ripped'' (the process of converting an audio CD to mp3 files) ...
