Herceptin's side effects.(Brief Article)
2002 MAY 30 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Around 30% of breast tumors contain cells that overexpress a protein called HER2/neu or ErbB2. The chemotherapy drug, Herceptin, blocks this protein and, as such, is highly effective in treating these types of cancer. It is widely used in the U.S. and some European countries, and was approved for use by the U.K. National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) in March 2002.
Undeniably, Herceptin saves lives. However, the drug, made by Swiss company Roche and U.S. biotechnology firm Genentech, carries the warning that it may in some instances "result in the development of ventricular dysfunction and congestive heart failure" - conditions of cardiomyopathy.
