Saab's first all-new 9-3 since 1993 (when it introduced the second-generation 900) comes to market this fall riding on a distinctly Swedish version of General Motors' global midsize front-wheel-drive Epsilon platform.
So say Saab officials who had engineers involved in development of the GM platform early. They claim to have made substantial changes to make the architecture work for its entry-level luxury breed. That would be no easy feat, considering the same platform underpins everything from the next Chevy Malibu to the Pontiac Grand Am to the Opel Vectra in Europe.
First off, just as hatchbacks seem to be regaining ground in the U.S. market, Saab is ditching its longstanding hatchback 9-3 in favor of debuting a sport sedan as its first 9-3 offering this September.
