Concept collectibles
* Rare-automobile collectors get a rare opportunity when Ford Motor Co. auctions off auto show concept vehicles.
The concepts to be sold next month were shown during the past four decades. They include Ford's 1993 Lagonda Vignale luxury four-door and one of two original show mock-ups extant of the 2002 Thunderbird.
Ford will work with auction house Christie's to sell 51 concepts at the June 16 auction. The auction will be held near Ford's world headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, though a site has not yet been chosen.
A Christie's spokesman estimates most of the vehicles will fetch between $10,000 and $40,000. Higher-profile concepts-like the 1960 Ghia Selene II and 1992 Mustang Mach III-might pull in as much as $1 million. Most of the concepts slated for sale were produced in the 1980s and 1990s.
While these vehicles carry loads of historical value, none are street legal. Many are capable of running under their own power, while others are simply body-on-frame platforms or styling bucks with no interior and no powertrain.
Few carmakers, if any, pull concepts out of their archives and sell them to the public. Company spokeswoman Jennifer Flake says the auction is designed to kick off Ford's centennial celebration.
