"The language mechanism in your brain can get stimulated during sex, which could trigger involuntary vocal reactions," explains Donna Jo Napoli, Ph.D., linguistics professor at Swarthmore College. The most common sex sounds are unintelligible, and Jill *, 26, is among the moaning masses: "When I'm turned on, I'm not coherent; I just make these totally primal moans," she says. They have a lot to do with what your bod is doing at the time of utterance. "During sex, when you are rocking your pelvis, squeezing and tensing your pelvic muscles, and inhaling deeply, your body is tensed -- the noise you make on your exhale is the sound of that tension being released," explains Betty Dodson, Ph.D., a sexologist in New York City.

Hollering your head off during sex is a way of taking moans to the next loud and lusty level. "For many people, sexual pleasure is heightened by hearing their own sounds," says June Reinisch, Ph. D., director emerita of the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, Indiana. "Since screaming is so unbridled and over-the-top, it can truly transport you." Shrieking between the sheets works for Robyn, 31. "Screaming full-on during sex gets me even more excited," she says. "The louder I yell, the better."
