Does it pay to speak out against America in Europe? Yes, according to Peter Wilby, editor of the British weekly New Statesman. The magazine has seen a 20 percent subscription increase since its first scathing post-September 11 editorial, which questioned the "innocence" of the victims of the World Trade Center attacks. Wilby has continued to publish controversial left-wing anti-American pieces as well as those that criticize America's public ally No. 1, British Prime Minister Tony Blair. And Wilby credits this anti-American line for the magazine's increase in popularity. NEWSWEEK's Ginanne Brownell spoke with him:
