Rwandan-backed rebels leaving eastern Congo town.

KINSHASA : Rwandan-backed rebels in eastern Congo have withdrawn from Moliro, a town they seized less than two weeks ago in a raid which threw crucial peace talks into crisis, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

But rebel officials and police remain in Pweto, another strategic town the UN Security Council told the rebels to vacate, to try to stop a looting spree by local people, a UN official said.

The government side walked out of peace talks in South Africa when rebels seized Moliro, and the confused situation in Pweto means the talks remain under threat, Amos Ngongi, head of the UN mission to Congo (MONUC), told journalists in Kinshasa.
