Govt must toughen product label laws.

An event has taken place that epitomizes the government's view of the issue of consumer protection. The government's trade watchdog, the Fair Trade Commission, announced Friday that it had issued a cease-and-desist administrative order against Snow Brand Foods Co. over its mislabeling of beef.

Yet the FTC order was rather belated as the company already had decided to dissolve due to plunging sales following its false labeling scandals.

The FTC should have acted quickly to ease consumer anxiety over beef products when the mislabeling scandal was exposed in January.
