Taipei, 26 February: The future of Taiwan could one day be in the hands of the people of the island through a referendum on the issue and one lawmaker is trying to lay the foundation for such a vote to take place.

Lawmaker Tsai Trong-rong of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said Tuesday [26 February] that he has gained the endorsement of 114 of his colleagues at the 225-seat Legislative Yuan advocating the passage of the "public referendum bill" in the current session of the legislature, which opened 1 February.
