Once again at Talladega, 43 drivers and 185,000 fans waited nervously for ``the Big One'': the violent multi-car pileup that's inevitable when the Winston Cup cars, tightly bunched by their NASCAR-enforced restrictor plates and aero configurations, run on the high banks. At Talladega, usually it's coming off Turn Two, where the track funnels a bit. But with 30 or 40 cars running two-, three- and even four-wide for laps on end, the Big One is guaranteed to happen somewhere, sometime. You can bet the farm and the truck on that.
This time the Big One didn't come until late, with 25 laps to go. But when the dust cleared on the backstretch, this would be the Biggest One in modern Winston Cup history: 24 cars were caught up in the mess. Meanwhile, Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the win, his second in a row at Talladega, continuing Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s dominance of the plate tracks. Earnhardt's teammate and frequent drafting partner Michael Waltrip finished second. Kenny Wallace crossed the line fifth in yet another DEI-built Chevy, this one owned by Waltrip, but was penalized for passing under the yellow line and was scored 21st.
