Sometimes the most obvious solution to your luxury car needs sits right below your nose. Or maybe you knew that and chose not to sniff.

* Lincoln LS

Price: $38,540

Engine: 3.0-liter V6, 220 hp, 215 lb-ft

Curb weight: 3603 lbs

Drivetrain: rwd, five-speed manual

There must be a reason (or reasons) Lincoln hasn't been able to move the LS off dealer lots recently. Consider that more than 50,000 people bought Lincoln's 5 Series-fighter in 2000, but in '01 that figure dropped to less than 40,000. We don't think its slackening sales mean the LS is a bad car; rather, after its initial splash, buyers figured out the car is a little dull. We love the fact the V6 model is shift-it-yourself, and overall the LS is a fine handler. We like it even more with the torquier V8. But its overall design and comparatively poor fit-and-finish leave plenty to be desired. Still, if American luxury (albeit based on a Euro theme) and decent overall drive characteristics for less than 40k is what you're after, you may want to take a look at the LS. Or not.
