Another Scheckter
* While his elder brother, Tomas, races on the Indy Racing League ovals in the States, Toby Scheckter will spend his summer on ovals in Europe, competing in the ASCAR series, which alternates between Rockingham Speedway in the United Kingdom and EuroSpeedway Lausitzring in Germany. The 22-year-old son of the 1979 Formula One world champion, Jody Scheckter, was signed this week by the Torquespeed team, which won the 2001 ASCAR title with John Mickel. Young Scheckter will not find ASCAR easy, because it seems to be growing fast, with a number of ``name'' European drivers switching to the 18-race oval series this season. Former CART driver Nicholas Minassian and former British F3 champion Kelvin Burt will drive for a new team formed by RML. Reigning British Touring Car champion Jason Plato and former works Audi driver John Bintcliffe will also be teammates, as will former Panoz sports car driver Klaus Graf and former CART competitor Arnd Meier. New Zealand's former World Superbike ace, Aaron Slight, is another newcomer. ASCAR cars are modeled after Ford, Chevrolet and Pontiac stockers and powered by a 350-cid Chevrolet LS1 small-block ``spec'' engine, prepared to deliver 450 hp. The cars weigh 1300 kg (2860 pounds), run on Goodyear spec tires and have a top speed of 180 mph. When ASCAR 2002 begins at Rockingham on May 5, it will have one of the biggest TV packages outside Formula One and NASCAR.
