Prosecutors called a homicide victim's wife as their first witness Friday during a preliminary hearing for her brother, who is accused of abducting and killing the man.
On cross-examination, Deputy Public Defender Joseph Abood asked the widow, Susanne Carno, if she knew whether authorities considered her a suspect in the case.
"My understanding is yes, they do suspect me," the woman replied.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Owens later objected when Abood asked a homicide detective whether Carno, 33, was indeed a suspect. Owens said the answer could compromise the ongoing investigation.
Justice of the Peace Jennifer Togliatti sustained the objection, preventing the detective from giving a response.
Togliatti heard from several other witnesses Friday before ordering Carno's brother, John Brian Ray, to stand trial on multiple charges in connection with the asphyxiation death of 36-year-old Richard Charles Carno.
