We'd like to think that the pleadings in these pages made thses cars into reality. Self-aggrandizement? No doubt.

We wanted a hatchback, and we made that desire known. Loudly, too. We liked the coupe just fine, even called it the car ``kids have been wanting for years.'' But the 1999-2000 Civic Si-no matter how well it handled at the track, no matter how many 7.23-second 0-to-60-mph runs we got on Woodward Avenue after dark-never quite fit our vision of pocket-rocket cool. It wasn't like the previous Civic Si, and definitely not like the CRX Si. So when the coupe went away, we didn't hide our eagerness to have it replaced by a hatch, any hatch. Five-door, three-door, it didn't matter. We just wanted a body style befitting its hot-hatch heritage. What we got was spaetzle. A high-revving, road-hugging, rally-inspired potato dumpling-and we love it.
