The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA, Bethesda, MD) wants to know why alcoholics drink, a question that has alcoholics themselves perplexed. The NIAAA has announced a 5- yr. "Integrative Neuroscience Initiative on Alcoholism" funded at approximately $50 million to define the brain circuits and mechanisms that underlie behavioral responses to chronic and excessive alcohol consumption. The initiative will integrate research knowledge from animal and human studies and multiple analytic approaches to understand the neuroadaptive changes in the brain that occur with chronic alcohol exposure and contribute to excessive drinking.
