WASHINGTON ? Compaq Computer Corp. chairman and CEO Michael Capellas said March 26 that there was no word yet on when independent proxy counters would complete their tally of the Hewlett-Packard Co. shareholder vote, though he indicated the firms were continuing to prepare for life as a single competitor.

Capellas told the Council of Institutional Investors that Compaq and HP will concentrate on making the merger painless for customers. That means announcing shortly on the fate of various products made by both companies.
