UNION, N.J. -- Bed Bath & Beyond may be on the verge of entering the health and beauty care consumables business. In a surprise move earlier this month, the big-box home goods retailer acquired 27-unit Harmon Discount, a cosmetics and HBC chain that does business in the area surrounding New York City, otherwise known as the greater tri-state market, which includes southern Connecticut and northern New Jersey.

Although it's believed that the acquisition will have little immediate effect either on Bed Bath & Beyond's financials or the growth of its house-wares superstores, it does offer the company the chance to develop its consumables expertise and maybe even give it a …
