The viola d'amore is a curious offshoot of the viola da gamba family. To increase the resonance of the sound, its seven bowed strings are supplemented by seven sympathetic strings that vibrate to the same pitches. Thus it has the nutty sound of the viola with ghostly harmonics in the background.
This program is an interesting school of French composers, members of the Society of Ancient Instruments. Saint-Saens was one of the founders, and so was Henri Gasadesus (1879-1947), while Louis van Waefelghem (1840-1908) was an actual performer on the viola d'amore. ...
