NEWSWEEK's story "The Lonely Rebel" (World Affairs, March 4), seeking to rubbish President Thabo Mbeki, begs one question: why? Rudimentary fact checking would have averted errors; e.g., I do not chair the cabinet's AIDS panel of ministers, and I see the president by appointment, not over "sundowners."
Throughout the article there is a narrow, gossipy focus, complete with tall Scotches and beautiful (though distant past) blondes. This says nothing about the policies, programs and achievements of the government that Mbeki leads.
