Ford Fusion

The Fiesta was Ford's big news in small cars at Frankfurt last fall, so the Fusion mini-SUV prototype (or ``niche-busting'' UAV-Urban Activity Vehicle) based on the new Fiesta platform kind of sat there in the shadows. Now, here's the production version of Ford's challenger of Korean SUVs and the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe. We Americans are getting a Fusion by late 2003, only with engines different from the direct-injection, 1.1-liter turbocharged three-cylinder it wore at previous shows. Try the 1.4- and 1.6-liter motors from the Fiesta. It'll be built in Brazil, a land renowned for coffee plants, banana plants and underutilized Ford plants.
