The Pentagon, Washington, D.C.
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced today that the proposed Office of Strategic Influence would be "shelved indefinitely."
Responding to questions from the Pentagon press corps, Secretary Rumsfeld made the announcement "in the context of providing the media and the American people with as much information as we can," adding that "the true nature of the proposed office has been distorted and misunderstood in the past few weeks."
The proposed Office of Strategic Influence came under scrutiny from media watchdogs when it was revealed that part of the Office's mission would include the dissemination of "disinformation" and "misinformation" and the use of "psy-ops" (psychological operations) techniques to confuse our enemies.
