That yellow blur across the IRL's sky is Sam Hornish Jr. in the Pennzoil-sponsored Panther Racing car. For those keeping score, that's five wins for Hornish in the past 14 races. And for the second straight season, the championship is his to lose.
Hornish, now all of 22 years old, won the season-opening race at Homestead Miami Speedway. It was his second straight win on this tricky 1.5-mile oval and his second in a row in the series overall. He won last year's season-ender at Texas, also from the pole.
Hornish is starting to dominate the IRL. He led 166 of 200 laps at Homestead; last year he led 142 laps there. The only time he was passed for the lead Saturday was when he missed a shift on a restart and Helio Castroneves slipped past. Castroneves' lead lasted one lap before Hornish stormed back.
IRL veteran Jeff Ward, who finished fourth, echoed that sentiment after being the only driver to consistently race Hornish at Homestead. ``He's certainly got [short tracks] dialed in.''
Hornish was so good, he nearly had a two-lap lead when a late caution flag waved. The Penske team gambled by leaving its cars out as Hornish pitted on lap 162. That decision put them back on the lead lap and a few laps later they got to pit for much-needed fuel and ...
