Owners of Infiniti's Q45 may look like they're talking to themselves, but the truth is they're probably either changing the radio station or turning on the a/c. In one of 150 dialects-so the make claims-an owner can use voice-activated commands to control the heating/air conditioning and audio systems in this well-appointed flagship sedan.

We found the third-generation Q45 to be a comfortable, luxurious sedan that is great for cruising, if not a little gimmicky. One of numerous electronic gizmos comes into view the minute you start to back out of the driveway. A rear-mounted camera projects the view rearward down at bumper level, complete with superimposed green-to-red markings indicating measurements of nine, six, and three, two, one feet.

The navigation system, using the same center-dash screen, offers a bird's-eye view of the big picture. Not all owners appreciated the overhead view, but the system can also deliver a normal map view-and yes, the car talks back to the owner, giving directions in an assertive female voice. It's no easier-or harder-to control these advanced functions than is the case in a Mercedes-Benz, BMW or Lexus. A steep learning curve seems to be in the nature of the luxury sedan beast of the 21st century.

Put the Q in gear and there's nothing gimmicky about the driving. The 340-hp V8 provides more than enough power for the 3800-pound sedan. We hit 60 mph in 6.87 seconds at the track. This doesn't put it in John Force territory, but like one owner said, his car feels like a hot ...
