2002 MAR 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Women infected with HIV are more likely to suffer complications after obstetric or gynecologic surgery, researchers in Germany warn.
"Clinical observations indicate that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive women experience more postoperative problems than do HIV negative women," according to Dr. Thomas A. Grubert and colleagues at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.
Postoperative morbidity is especially likely after certain procedures, Grubert and coworkers found.
The researchers reviewed data from 235 obstetric and gynecologic procedures performed on HIV positive women. This patient cohort was compared with an equally large group of age- and procedure-matched HIV negative controls, according to the report.
Infected women had significantly higher postoperative morbidity rates, especially those with highly compromised immune systems. HIV patients were almost eight times more likely to suffer from complications after gynecologic curettage, study data showed, while the risk of morbidity after abdominal surgery was more than tripled for HIV positive women.
