2002 MAR 13 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Terry Hartnett, senior medical writer - Nursing homes are a breeding ground for pneumonia, and many residents are hospitalized with a potentially deadly diagnosis that could easily have been prevented, say researchers in France.

"Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remains a serious disease for elderly persons living in nursing homes," says H. Laurichesse and colleagues at Carameau Hospital in Nimes.

Laurichesse and coworkers conducted a chart review of 215 elderly patients who were admitted to the hospital and treated for CAP. They wanted to determine why these patients were infected with pneumonia, what course of therapy worked best in improving symptoms and decreasing risk of death, and if more comprehensive pneumonia and influenza vaccination of nursing home would decrease the incidence rate.

The researchers reviewed the patients' medical records in these categories: prehospital prevention steps for flu and pneumonia, the strain of pneumonia, antibiotic treatment both during and prior to hospitalization, and mortality indicators (Pre- and inhospital management of community acquired pneumonia ...
