2002 MAR 13 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Safety fears that have led some British parents to refuse to have their children vaccinated could lead to many unnecessary deaths if the concerns spread to developing countries, the United Nations health agency says.
Claims that the combined vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella - known as MMR - could cause autism or bowel disorders in some children are "without scientific merit," said Dr. John Clemens, a medical officer for the World Health Organization.
"It appears that the coverage for the MMR vaccine is falling, and that will mean that more children will contract the diseases. That will expose more children to complications and death. We are naturally watching these events, in particular in countries where measles causes many deaths," Clemens said.
Parents are increasingly shunning the vaccine.
