Biotech opponents are calling on the Brazilian government to tighten a federal decree calling for the labeling of all food products with greater than 4% transgenic content.

The labeling decree was due to take effect last Dec. 31 but has yet to be implemented. It requires that labels use the wording "genetically modified" or "contains genetically modified organisms."

Opponents are pressing hard for all foods with biotech content of 1% or more to be labeled, as is the case in the European Union. They also note that the current decree sets a 4% level for any single biotech ingredient, but a product could conceivably have several ingredients with a combined …
