A SKATING STUNNER: Sixteen-year-old American Sarah Hughes (center) was not expected to win the women's figure-skating competition. Michelle Kwan of the United States and Russia's Irina Slutskaya were the heavily hyped favorites. But while Kwan and Slutskaya made crucial mistakes, Hughes skated flawlessly, landing two triple-triple jump combinations in the evening's most technically difficult program. She shocked everybody (including herself) by moving up from fourth place to capture the gold. Slutskaya won the silver, and Kwan the bronze. Said Hughes: "I skated for pure enjoyment. That's how I wanted my Olympic moment to be."
TRIPLE PLAY: For years Austria's Stephan Eberharter skied in the shadow of the great Hermann Maier. Not anymore. The 32-year-old veteran was the star of the alpine events. Though he could manage only a bronze in the downhill, where he was the favorite, Eberharter rallied to take a silver in the super G and a gold in the giant slalom.
