Members of the Japan-Philippines Volunteer Association are building an international university in Davao on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines.

The volunteer group, based in Chofu, western Tokyo, was formed in 1990. Using Davao as a base, the group committed itself to planting trees to replace destroyed rain forests and supply medicine and other aid to poor local people.

The group has also managed to have tree-planting included in local primary and middle school students' after-school activities, and continues to encourage residents of the area to commit themselves to reviving the forests …
