LIVING STANDARDS OF OLDER NEW ZEALANDERS

Associate Professor Peter Travers, Head of the School of Social Administration and Social Work, Faculty of SociaI Sciences, Flinders University, presented a seminar at the Institute on 16 August 2001. He is pictured with the Institute's Director David Stenton (right).

A series of studies on the living standards of older New Zealanders was commissioned in 1999 by the Super 2000 Taskforce, and later taken over by the New Zealand Ministry of Social Policy. This seminar reported on the findings of the surveys, and their innovative methodology for measuring living standards. When the reports on the surveys were launched in Wellington in July they attracted considerable media coverage, and widely divergent interpretations. …
