The government has decided to accept up to 1,000 asylum seekers including the 216 already in Manus. And their stay in the country has been extended from six months to 12 months. But the additional 784 asylum seekers will be brought into the country in line with the capacity of the processing centre at Lombrum naval base in Manus which can accommodate up to 600 asylum seekers at any one time.
Australian Immigration Minister Phil Ruddock was reported to be delighted with the PNG cabinet's decision.
