2002 FEB 21 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - The number of fetuses a woman carries while pregnant may increase her risk for gestational diabetes, researchers in Israeli have reported.
Gestational diabetes, with characteristics resembling type 2 diabetes, arises during the course of pregnancy in a small segment of the population, and often resolves after pregnancy. The authors of a study evaluating 188 women with triplet pregnancies have indicated that the more infants a woman carries, the greater her chances for developing gestational diabetes. They explained that during multiple pregnancies, more hormones known to cause diabetes may be produced.
Of the 188 pregnancies, "One hundred three of them continued as triplets, whereas 85 women elected to undergo fetal reduction to twins," said E. Sivan and coworkers at Sheba Medical Center, Tel-Hashomer, Israel. The average age of women in both groups was 29 years, and in both groups the women had experienced similar numbers of pregnancies.
"The rate of gestational diabetes was significantly higher in the triplet group than in the reduction group (22.3% vs. 5.8%)," Sivan and colleagues commented.
