Napoleon once predicted that China's awakening would "shake the world." It has certainly rocked the publishing world in Asia, where a slew of tomes obsessed with the economic clout of the People's Republic have been released recently. Many of the books adopt the same alarmist tone common to U.S. diatribes against Japan Inc. in the 1980s: they picture an Asia that is sliding inevitably into a tributary relationship with the former Middle Kingdom. "Will Korea become China's 32d province?" asks "China Shock," a breathless account of a country "more capitalist than Korea" compiled by reporters from Seoul's Maeil Business Newspaper.
