Behineh Namavar Jahromi and colleagues at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Shiraz conducted a study to "evaluate the rate of diagnosed female genital tuberculosis and its presentational symptoms and methods of diagnosis."
In the vast majority of patients, genital tuberculosis was diagnosed while searching for the causes of infertility, Jahromi and coworkers said.
The researchers reviewed data from 41 women with diagnoses of genital tuberculosis in the Fars Province Health Center between 1989 and 1999. In 10 of those women the disease was diagnosed after they presented with abdominal pain or abnormal uterine bleeding, according to the report.
In the other 31 cases, tuberculosis was found during a diagnostic procedure - usually endometrial curettage - performed to find reasons for infertility. More than three quarters (75.6%) of the women diagnosed with genital tuberculosis were infertile, study data showed.
