2002 FEB 13 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- U.S. President George W. Bush is proposing the largest raise ever for the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) - a $3.7 billion increase, almost half of which will go to bioterrorism research.
If Congress agrees, the raise would give the NIH $27.3 billion next year - the final installment of a 5-year bipartisan plan to double the budget of the nation's premier medical research agency.
The proposal earmarks $1.5 billion for bioterrorism research. Among the priorities are developing better vaccines against anthrax and smallpox and better tests to quickly diagnose smallpox, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the NIH's infectious disease chief, said in an interview.
The money marks a fivefold increase in NIH's bioterrorism spending. That's a large jump, Fauci acknowledged, but one he called an important down payment. "It's a lot of money and hopefully...we will deliver to the American public what they need to feel much more comfortable about how we can respond" to an attack, he said.
Part of the money will go to building specialized new laboratories for such research, Fauci said. One, the most secure type, called a "biolevel-4 lab," is planned for Hamilton, Montana, where NIH has an infectious-disease research campus. Only in BL-4 ...
