If your twinges tend to strike two weeks before your period is due, you probably have a harmless condition called mittelschmerz (German for "middle pain"), says Leslie Choy-Hee, M.D., an assistant professor of OB-GYN at Emory University in Atlanta. "When the egg is released from the ovary, many women experience cramps and soreness for up to 24 hours," she explains. But if your pain is acute or persists for more than two weeks, see your gyno--you may have a cyst, a fluid-filled sac in your ovaries. These growths usually go away on their own but in rare cases need to be surgically removed. Your doc should also rule out a pregnancy complication, such as ectopic pregnancy.
