This section is about how to quit smoking and stay smoke-free. Wait! Don't flip to the next section just because you're a nonsmoker with no intention of ever smoking! You could use these tips someday to help a friend or family member stop smoking. You might even use them yourself to break other unhealthy habits.
Reinforce your decision to quit.
* Start by writing down your reasons for smoking. Then write down your reasons for quitting. Make several copies of your list and put them where you will be most likely to see them often-in your wallet or in your dresser drawer, for example.
Set a quit date.
* Pick a date that's less than one month in the future and mark it on a calendar. Avoid holidays or other times of extra stress.
Plan your strategy for quitting.
* Identify the things that might make it hard for you. (Example: Your best friend is a smoker.)
