Publicly confirming what we reported a month ago (AW, Dec. 17, 2001), Porsche chairman Wendelin Wiedeking announced at the Detroit show that the company will build the Carrera GT supercar.
First shown at the Paris auto show in September 2000, the Carrera GT has been the subject of intense production speculation. Only in the past month did Porsche officials decide to build the car.
Powered by a mid-mounted 5.5-liter V10 linked to a six-speed gearbox, the race car-based rear-wheel-drive Carrera GT will produce 558 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. It's estimated to run from 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds and to a top speed ...
