For Sherry Gallant of West Royalty, P.E.I. a way to stay at home with her children while making a few extra dollars has turned into a lucrative business. Gallant is the owner of Compu-Covers, a small firm which manufactures and markets custom-made, coated-nylon dust covers to protect computer equipment.
Like so many successful business people, Gallant's idea arose out of a need. In 1984 she was living in Regina, Sask. and looking for work that would allow her to stay at home with her two small children. When her husband brought a new computer home, they noticed that it didn't have a cover. "He said, Hey, why don't you start making covers for computers?"'
Gallant, who sewed as a hobby, quickly put together her first set of covers. I didn't do any market research at all,' she says. "I just made one set of covers and took them to a computer club." The club members were interested and before she knew it, Gallant was in business.
