After three years, Margaret McMillan still beams when she talks about her business. "Ifs always exciting when people walk in through the door," the former teacher smiles. "Everybody who comes in to Granny Bates is really enthusiastic about kids' books."

Ifs no accident that Granny Bates is a success. As Newfoundland's first and only bookstore catering exclusively to children, it fills a need for high quality children's books that previously could only be met by those willing to endure the hassles of dealing in mail order with bookstores in Halifax or Toronto. "We were sure the potential was there-we'd spent a solid year and a half planning, not to mention the several years of research I'd put in before that," Margaret says when explaining how she and Nora Lester, another former teacher, decided to open the store.
