For the first time in the nine-year history of the award, jurors voted North American Car of the Year honors to a car wearing a Japanese nameplate: the 2002 Nissan Altima. Chevrolet TrailBlazer claimed the North American Truck of the Year award.

The U.S.-built Altima's win over the European-bred 2003 Cadillac CTS and the retro Ford Thunderbird didn't surprise Jed Connelly, Nissan North America senior vice president of sales and marketing. Connelly said Altima was designed and built for the competitive North American midsize sedan segment-a market accustomed to Japanese cars like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

``We think this is the car that will put Nissan back at the front of the pack,'' Connelly said.
