Cars as cars, trucks as trucks; All is right in the world for 2002.(Brief Article)

As a general rule, 2001 was a good year for cars as cars and trucks as trucks. Or put another way, candidates for 2002 North American Car of the Year were, well, cars. Similarly, most everything competing for top truck honor was a truck, or at least truck-like.

We could argue for years about the merits of one car or truck over another, but at least this year we're not debating whether the finalists are cars or trucks. Last year, you may recall, the truck-minivan-hatchback-wagon-like PT Cruiser won top car honors, while the car-like Acura MDX won the truck title. Sort of makes this year's voting look simple, doesn't it?

Not so fast.

On the car side, the jury of 49 North American automotive journalists faced the daunting task of sorting out the following list: Acura RSX, Audi A4, Cadillac CTS, Ford Thunderbird, Infiniti Q45, Jaguar X-Type, Mercedes-Benz C-Coupe, Nissan Altima, Subaru Impreza WRX and Toyota ...
