Better VIII than never
Mitsubishi confirms its Lancer Evolution will be sold in America, starting in January 2003. While the car at the Los Angeles show was an Evo VII, next year's production car could be an Evo VIII, given the development time between now and then. Mitsubishi says to expect ``more than 250 rabid horses'' from the turbocharged 2.0-liter four, four-wheel drive, Brembo brakes and a sticker price below $30,000.

Nissan's all-new 350Z doesn't go on sale until August, but Nissan will accept pre-orders beginning Jan. 15. Prices, announced at the Detroit show, range from $26,269 for the base enthusiast model to $34,079 for the top-of-the-line track model (excluding delivery fees). Mid-level touring and performance packages are also available.
The first new Z since 1996 features a 280-hp, 3.5-liter dohc V6, four-wheel independent suspension and a six-speed manual or five-speed auto transmission.
