2002 JAN 17 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - A new study of women with breast cancer has revealed ultrasound images of arteries leading to the breast may provide useful diagnostic information.
After comparing the Doppler indices of several women with and without breast cancer, doctors at the University of Vienna in Austria have proclaimed ultrasound can give useful assessments of breast status with a specificity of more than 90%. A report of their study was issued in the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The study looked at two major arteries leading to the breast, the lateral thoracic artery, which investigators also called the breast-feeding artery, and the internal thoracic artery, which feeds breast tissues to a lesser extent. Several studies have already shown that some breast cancers are highly vascular, requiring an excess formation of new blood vessels to feed tumor growth and invasion. Blood from the two arteries in question supply tumor as well as normal tissue nourishment, and the new research suggests their activity appears to be affected by malignancy.
Sixty-seven breast cancer patients and 27 healthy volunteers without cancer participated in the study. In each woman, both breasts were subjected to ultrasound imaging, and Doppler values were compared for difference between the two. According to R. Obwegeser and fellow investigators, 88% of the lateral thoracic arteries could be seen on ultrasound imaging of the 94 women.
In breasts where cancer diagnoses had been made, there were ...
